Today I took the elevator to go to 31st floor from 36th floor to handle some work there. As it was lunch time, the elevator was a little crowded. When I and another colleague entered the crowded elevator, I noticed a chubby young man clasping his arms with his hands. A pair of mild eyes and a slightly smiling mouth made his whole face look friendly. It could be seen that he clasped his arms in order to avoid squeezing others and make himself occupy as little space as possible to facilitate the people around him. When I got out of the elevator, I couldn’t help looking back at him and I discovered that his clothes were not those of my company employees. Therefore, I thought that such a friendly smile was actually kind of silent warmth. Then I could not help thinking of some other similar scenes in New York.
In such a world well-known developed city as New York, we notice that some people are engaged in service industry, for example supermarket cashiers, cleaners and other service workers, while some people are served objects. Whenever we meet any people in elevator, they will greet us very kindly. Such phenomenon can be observed everywhere in New York. What’s the reason?
At the same time, we learn that some kindly people had already been refined-tempered, well-featured, tall, slim (woman) and robust (man) as early as in the past when plastic surgery was so popular yet. What’s the reason for this?
Everything in the world has its own karma. We can learn easily from the Buddhist scriptures that “thirty-two looks and eighty marks” means that people have thirty-two looks and eighty marks. Both the noble temperament and good looks of people originated from blessings which came from cultivation, doing the good and accumulating virtue generation after generation.
Therefore, the same smiling face, a pair of friendly and joyful eyes as well as friendly greeting really makes us feel warm. Such behavior is trivial, but it embodies culture, virtue and quality.
