The courses of 18th “Pure Sincerity Plan” of Zen Tao Business School ended at 5:00 p.m. yesterday. I benefited a lot from the courses. In particular, I was inspired by the process of climbing up Bawcock Slope.
I think that most people can understand the general meanings of merit and virtue when they see these two words, but it may be difficult to develop deeper understanding. Hereby I share a bit of my perception with you.
Merit and virtue is our ability to realize all our good wishes. What is merit, what is virtue and what’s the relationship between them? “Merit” is the technical ability that we gain through long-term and uninterrupted efforts, i.e. our ability to survive. How can we realize the value of our technical ability? In reality, we must have noticed that some people do have wisdom, intelligence and extraordinary technique, but their talents remain unrecognized and they achieve nothing in their whole life. What’s the reason? People’s wisdom, intelligence and technical skill belong to merit which is powerless if they only have “merit” but neglect the cultivation of their “virtue”.
Let me draw an analogy: when a person or an enterprise is climbing a mountain, the target is to reach the summit. Hereby I compare people to “merit” and mountain to “virtue”. If we only concentrate on climbing and think about reaching the summit ASAP, then what are we faced with after we finally reach the summit one day? We will have no other way to go under our feet but to go down the mountain. This is the result of “merit”. If we know the importance of virtue, our experience will be different. We can work on “merit” (climbing ceaselessly) on the one hand and cultivate our “virtue” (piling up the mountain constantly) on the other hand, and then our climbing height will be unlimited. Therefore, both “merit” and “virtue” are indispensable to achieving success in the future.
Some people may think that they have great blessings so it’s not necessary for them to cultivate merit and virtue. Firstly, blessing is not equal to merit. “Merit” consists of wisdom and ability, keeping still in deep meditation, observing the precepts and reading classics, etc. All these things need to be done by ourselves in person rather than by others. Merit is gained by ourselves through cultivation while we can give blessing to others and be given with blessing by others, for example, we can use wealth to help others who can also use wealth to help us.
Never forget: merit and virtue contains blessing while blessing doesn’t contain merit or virtue; merit and virtue is everlasting while blessing is transitory.
